Could your street opt out of Glyphosate spraying?

No Glyphosate Sheffield is a new group that has been formed to campaign against the Council’s use of Glyphosate on our streets in Sheffield.

Sheffield City Council is currently deciding whether individual streets can opt out of glyphosate spraying. The group wants to show councillors that our community supports a healthier street, and the more streets that agree in principle, the stronger our voice will be.

Your street should opt out of Council spraying of Glyphosate because of

Health Risks
The World Health Organization(WHO) classifies glyphosate as”probably carcinogenic to humans,” specifically linking it to non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Immediate Side Effects

Spray drift can cause short-term exposure, leading to skin and eye irritation, respiratory
issues, headaches or dizziness.

Gardens & Crops:
Wind can carry the chemical onto neighbouring properties, risking home-grown fruits, vegetables and private plants.

Wildlife & Pollinators
Widespread spraying destroys habitats, harms bees & pollinators, and damages local
aquatic life.

Pet Safety
Dogs and cats can easily ingest the chemical by walking on freshly sprayed areas and licking their paws or fur.

How can we manage our pavement plants instead?
To keep our street tidy and safe without chemicals, we could look at successful green models.

Options include:
Organising a friendly team of willing neighbours to help pull problematic ‘weeds’.
Leaving non-disruptive, benign plants to grow and flower for local wildlife, which has worked beautifully in Freiburg, Germany.
Using eco-friendly weed control methods.
