Only Fools Insure Fossil Fuels! Extinction Rebellion at the BIBA Conference in Manchester.

On 14th May 2025 Extinction Rebellion lobbied the British Insurance Brokers Association Conference in Manchester.

We call on BIBA to demand its members:

• Stop brokering insurance for fossil fuels.
• Boycott insurers of fossil fuels.
• Instead, insure sustainable projects to ensure our future.

INSURE OUR SURVIVAL NOT FOSSIL FUELS

The world’s largest insurance company Allianz recently warned that the climate crisis is on track to destroy capitalism, as the risks become uninsurable. Guther Thallinger of Allianz SE in the Guardian, April 2025

CO2 levels rose more than ever in 2024 with the Earth’s average surface temperature the warmest on record, resulting in increased global levels of flooding, wildfires, droughts and crop failures.

Meanwhile, some BIBA members are facilitating the expansion of a fossil fuel industry that puts obscene profits above the survival of current and future generations: e.g. Marsh are brokering insurance for new projects such as the EACOP and LNG terminals. EACOP is the 1443 kilometres long East African Crude Oil Pipeline causing 34 million tons of CO2 emissions annually and displace 100,000 people. LNG (methane) terminals escalate the climate crisis & harm the communities they are built in. Are you in the insurance industry? Talk to your workmates: businesses change when enough staff ask them to change. Ask questions: if you and your workmates don’t feel your business is being serious about tackling the climate crisis, ask them: why not? Use your clout: use your internal power, influence or seniority to ask your business to make climate breakdown front and centre in its future planning and decision-making. Most importantly- find climate allies!
