Samba Band supports the 16 heading for the Court of Appeal

The Five Rivers Rising Fusion Samba Band played on the Moor on Thursday in support of the 16 political prisoners who are going to the Court of Appeal this week ((29th and 30th Jan). There will be a good delegation from Sheffield there to support them.

Please listen to Chris Packham here and read information about the Court of Appeal hearings from Defend our Juries.

If you are interested in joining the mobilisation outside the Court in London, see the Action Briefing here.

Meanwhile in Sheffield these letters appeared in the Sheffield Star.

John Bunting states that it is not true that Roger Hallam is in prison “for his attempts to alert us of the dire threat of global heating”. We may not agree with his methods but we can’t dispute his motivation. Whatever the cost of his actions is, they are minuscule compared to the damage already caused by global heating, with the increase in extreme weather and the reduction in food supplies. If only the Government and Media would listen to the scientists and act on their warnings climate protestors would find much better things to do. Instead, radical measures are required to make people aware that billions of lives are now threatened by our overheating climate caused mainly by our use of fossil fuels.

John is correct to say that Roger Hallam was found guilty by a jury. But that jury was not allowed to hear about what motivated him to take such extreme measures. Had they heard this they may have made a very different decision.

Lacking empathy for the suffering of people due to the LA wildfires will not help anyone. Some have lost their lives (29 at last count) and many have lost their homes. The wildfires are growing stronger each year. We need to be on a war footing both to protect citizens from extreme weather and to transform our society into one that can live in harmony with the planet.
