Please help Park Hill residents prevent their green spaces from becoming car parks.

Urban Splash has submitted plans for Phase 4 of Park Hill flats redevelopment, which is the block adjacent to Duke Street. Unfortunately, the plans for an Art Gallery here fell through as S1 Artspace could not raise the necessary funds.

So now the plan is to return them to residential units. You can view and comment on the plans here. https://planningapps.sheffield.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=dates&keyVal=RWI1PRNYLE300 . Comments need to be submitted by 11th July.

They are very controversial because the two green fields that were previously planned to become a Sculpture Park will now become car parks. Imagine how you would feel if you had bought or rented a property with a garden and then when you had lived there a few years the developers said “Well actually we need that land for a car park.”

The 2 fields in the foreground are planned to become car parks.

The residents have got together and formed an impressive campaign, getting on Calendar News and Radio Sheffield. As I write there are already 80 comments on the website.

Here is my objection.

“I generally support the scheme but am very disappointed with two aspects.
Firstly there is no provision for solar panels on the roof. This would appear to be an ideal location for solar power and is a huge lost opportunity. Park Hill could become a power station!
Secondly, the loss of 2 large areas of green space for car parking seems completely counter to the Council’s policy of encouraging Active Travel. As some of the new homes are for families it is vital to have green space for them to play on. The green space may not look much at the moment but the area is not well served with suitable green space to play on. Sheaf Valley Park is great, but no good for ball games! Park Hill is probably the best location in Sheffield for access to public transport, being so near the Station, Supertram, the bus station and the city centre. Why doesn’t Urban Splash create a car club so that on the few occasions residents can’t manage without a car they can easily hire one? I gather from residents that there is a demand for allotments. Some of the green space could be used for that if it wasn’t a car park. Current residents enjoy the view of the green space which will become ugly if it is full of parked cars.”

The 3 Green Councillors for City ward have objected. They write “”Tarmacking over what is a popular green area and community open space is completely unacceptable. Loss of this green space completely undermines the city’s commitment to reduce carbon emissions, and its goal to reach net zero by 2030”.

It seems Urban Splash do very nicely from the parking charges. Residents are currently charged £187 for three months. Contrast this with a Council residents parking scheme where residents pay £46 a year! So Urban Splash parking is 16 times more expensive than the Council!
