Gill Furniss’s pride is very misplaced.

I have written to the Sheffield Star in reply to Gill Furniss MP’s article “Britain must continue to show leadership tackling climate crisis”

Gill Furniss MP (Star 9/9/26) rightly despairs of Conservative and Reform policies on Climate Change but seems proud of her own government’s record. I think this pride is very misplaced.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham still hasn’t ruled out new drilling for oil and gas in the North Sea at Rosebank and Jackdaw, fossil fuels we can’t afford to burn if we want a safe climate. Labour is promoting new data centres around the country that will gobble up massive quantities of energy and water. The Government is expanding Heathrow Airport and reopening Doncaster Airport, promoting more flying that can never be sustainable. Their raison d’etre is to promote growth, meaning mining more raw materials to make more stuff, to make more profits for big corporations and billionaires, and never mind the consequences for the planet. 

This year, farmers in the UK and across the world have struggled to produce the crops we need as extreme weather, from drought to flood and from storm to heatwave, has battered the soil. Climate scientists tell us we are now extremely close to tipping points that could destroy our agricultural system. Yet politicians are ignoring them and carrying on with business as usual.  Sorry, Gill Furniss MP, but this is not good enough. We need to be on a war footing to tackle the climate and nature emergencies, which are the biggest threats to our national security. That would be leadership, as opposed to saying one thing and doing the opposite.
