Divestment Debate in Sheffield Council

Today (5th Feb 2025) in Full Council Sheffield Greens put a motion encouraging divestment from companies involved in supporting Israel. You can see the full motion here. (Item 11), proposed by Green Councillors Paul Turpin and Toby Mallinson.

Many Palestinian supporters were in the gallery. Two people asked questions of Council leader Cllr Tom Hunt.

And later various people were allowed to make statements and these were replied to by Cllr Hunt.

Cllr Martin Phipps attempted to move the item up the agenda, considering there was so much interest in the public gallery. But his motion was voted down by both Labour and Liberal Democrats.

At the end of the meeting, the motion was not debated but was voted on, with the Liberal Democrats voting against key parts of the motion and Labour abstaining.

Labour also changed the title of the motion and added other things to it.

It is so disappointing that Sheffield Council refuses to take a lead in divestment, while Councils like Waltham Forest are making great progress. The people of Gaza will not thank Sheffield Lib Dem and Labour Councillors for this watered-down resolution.”

This is how the motion was amended.
