Where is Dr Billings’s compassion?

Dr Alan Billings again defends the Israelis saying they are not carrying out Genocide (Star 2/12/23). He is right to point out that Genocide has a very clear definition. It is “the deliberate killing of a large number of people from a particular nation or ethnic group with the aim of destroying that nation or group. The group are the people living in Gaza. They have had their water supply cut off by Israel and the United Nations now says that more will die due to this than the bombing. The number of deaths, at 15,500, is already a very large number, but it is going to rise very quickly as winter sets in and disease spreads, with hospitals now unable to receive patients. This is a textbook example of Genocide and leading experts on the subject such as Luis Moreno Ocampo, former Chief Prosecutor in the International Criminal Court agree with me.

Dr Billings can argue whether or not it is genocide, but there can be no argument that it is a war crime.

Dr Billings complains that I do not mention the hostages. Of course, taking hostages is wrong and I am not condoning Hamas. But what of the Palestinian prisoners who are almost completely ignored by our media? Israel released 240 prisoners in return for the 110 hostages released by Hamas. Many of these Palestinians were women and children who had been detained without trial. How are these different from hostages? Since then Israel has arrested another 260 Palestinians and has no intention of giving them a trial. These are often people who have been evicted from their homes by Israeli settlers and have dared to complain as their homes are bulldozed.

Where is Dr Billings’s compassion for these people?

Here is Dr Alan Billings letter.
