Join the Swarm on Saturday!

Royal visit to Sheffield City Centre this Saturday

On Saturday September 9th Queen Beeatrice, Her Royal Honeyness Queen Bee of Sheffield, will be making a rare appearance in Sheffield City Centre. Accompanied by her workers the Queen wants to address the people of Sheffield with an important message. Her speech will be translated into English by the Bee Whizzperer, who has spent many years learning how to interpret buzzing into English.

The Queen will be serenaded by Sheffield Climate Choir. Here is the songsheet so you can join in. Wear black and arrive at 1.30 pm outside Pizza Express to get dressed up and practice. Or come and find us anytime between 2.30 and 4pm to watch.

It is believed the Queen will be appealing to Sheffielders to help stop the dramatic demise of insects. Bee numbers are in rapid decline as are many other insects. This country has lost 60% of its flying insects in the last 20 years. Wild bees, dragonflies, butterflies, tiny flying insects are all suffering and this in turn means less food for birds and mammals like hedgehogs. We are in a mass extinction event and we have to turn this round.

The Queen will lay the blame for the decline of insects firmly on humans because they destroy their food sources of wildflowers, pave over gardens and regularly spray pesticides and herbicides that poison insects.

She will be appealing for Sheffielders to stop using chemicals in their gardens and go organic, working with nature rather than against it. And she will be urging Sheffield City Council to stop spraying Glyphosate on our streets, housing estates, parks, playgrounds, cemeteries and woodland. Sheffield City Council’s Waste and Street Scene Committee will be receiving the report on the Glyphosate-free trial in the Brincliffe area on Wednesday, September 27th. The Queen Bee is urging the Council to move much faster in stopping the use of this poison which not only harms insects but is thought to cause cancer in humans.

The Queen will be in the Winter Gardens, Peace Gardens and in front of the Town Hall between 2.30 and 4pm on Saturday, September 9th.
