On Saturday 19th August Sheffield Extinction Rebellion will be visiting numerous Garden Centres in Sheffield. Dressed as bees they will be appealing for the public to stop buying Glyphosate, retailers to stop selling Glyphosate and Sheffield City Council to stop spraying it on our streets, housing estates, parks and cemeteries.
Glyphosate is the poisonous ingredient in most weedkillers such as Round Up, Weedol and Resolva. Not only is it dangerous for insects worms and birds it is also thought to cause cancer in humans.

Lynne Chapman of Sheffield XR said “We visited many Garden Centres last week to see which we should target. We were disappointed to find that every one of them stocked Glyphosate products. We wrote to all the managers and have received some replies, but none of the Garden centres is yet committed to stop stocking Glyphosate products. We will not be disrupting the Garden Centres but will be engaging with the public and offering them free wildflower seeds. We will be distributing a leaflet encouraging people to use alternatives such as hand weeding or the Gardeners World recipe using vinegar mixed with either baking soda, salt or lemon juice. We do not recommend herbicides marked “No Glyphosate” as these are linked to environmental and health problems too.”
Heather Worden explained why she will be attending the action. “I am very concerned that we have lost 60% of our flying insects in the last 20 years. We are in a nature emergency. We rely on insects like bees to pollinate our crops. If they go, we go too. It’s not difficult to understand that the first thing we should be doing is to stop poisoning them!”
Here is the leaflet that will be distributed.
