Vote for the biggest whopper of the Sheffield Election Campaign

There have been lots of whoppers told in this Election campaign in Sheffield. The following are all in the running for the Tell the Truth Sheffield Pinocchio Award. Vote today to help decide who should win the Pinocchio Award!

Sheffield Conservative Federation Chairman Steven Winstone stood in for the Brightside and Hillsborough Candidate at the Hustings at Christchurch Pitsmoor. His comment that the Tories had increased public spending during their time in office provoked much amusement in the audience! The truth is set out nicely in this Festival of Debate video, which shows that spending has been cut most in the most deprived areas.

This article from the Institute of Fiscal Studies, shows there may be some truth in Mr Winstone’s claim but it also shows that when compared with national income Public Spending is at its lowest level since the 1950’s.

Reform Candidate for Penistone and Stocksbridge Edward Gillingham was quoted in the Star as saying ““We’ve had 15 years of left-wing policies from the Tories. Now we have the prospect of even more extreme left-wing policies from Labour.” How far to the right do you have to be to consider the most right-wing Government this country has had as left-wing?

Lorna Maginnis-Conservative candidate for Heeley, claimed in her leaflet that she volunteers at a local Youth Club. But Lorna does not live in Sheffield, her address is in the Erewash Constituency. Many of our Youth Clubs have disappeared due to Government funding cuts. Perhaps Lorna could have made clearer exactly which Youth Club she volunteers for!

Conservative candidate for Hallam Isaac Howarth claimed in his election leaflet that “local Conservatives led the charge against what many called Labour’s environmental vandalism during the tree felling scandal.”

Miriam Cates, Conservative for Penistone and Stocksbridge is reported to have said at the hustings that “Israel isn’t killing civilians, they are killing terrorists.” According to Save the Children “Nearly 15,000  children in Gaza have been killed since October 7th 2023 and 21000 children are missing.

Party of Women Heeley Candidate Louise McDonald claimed on her leaflet that “There’s no such thing as “non-binary”. “Wikipedia begs to differ.
