A letter to the Sheffield Star in reply to Rev Dr Alan Billings
I can forgive Dr Alan Billings for spelling my name wrong, but I find it unacceptable that a Police and Crime Commissioner can have such a relaxed attitude to the genocide of over 12000 people. To talk of “degrading” when he means “killing” is an insult to the English language. He writes about Israel minimising civilian casualties but it is obvious this is not happening.
Israel is not hiding the fact that they are committing Genocide. They are boasting about it. Israeli officials have called for the eradication of Gaza as a place where Palestinians can live and said all Palestinians are viewed as legitimate targets for Israel’s bombs and bullets. It is not a war against Hamas. It is a war against the Palestinian people. 42% of the victims have been children.
Palestinians have been forced out of the northern half of Gaza and their hospitals have been attacked.
Gaza was already one of the most crowded places on Earth. Over a million have been forced into the southern half of the strip, where they are being subjected to a siege that denies them food, water and power. The UN warned that Gaza’s civilian population face starvation.
Israel has ordered Palestinians to leave much of the largest city in southern Gaza, Khan Younis. 2.3 million people are being packed into an ever-shrinking space.
Most have no home to return to. The schools, universities, bakeries, mosques and churches are mostly gone. Gaza is a wasteland.
Most genocide experts conclude Israel is carrying out genocide as well as ethnic cleansing. The goal in both cases is to drive Palestinians away from their homeland as happened in 1948 and again in 1967.
All war crimes need calling out. Israel is not excused by what Hamas did. Rev Dr Billings should not be standing up for a far-right Israeli Government intent on genocide. It is shocking that a Police and Crime Commissioner is condoning what will probably go down in history as one of the worst crimes of the 21st Century.
